![]() ABOUT THE ARTIST: R. Dale Smith is a writer and performer living in Richmond, Virginia. He is a graduate of James Madison University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Union Presbyterian Seminary, and works for the English Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. His work has most recently appeared in California English, Presbyterians Today, and the Acts of Faith Theater Festival. JESUS PHREAK is his first full-length show. |
JESUS PHREAK: THE STORY OF A VERY UNLIKELY DISCIPLE explores the
controversial topic of "gay Christians" in a manner that's funny and thought-provoking, and keeps both gay and straight audiences
involved. Using a lesser-known rule in the Bible that says people shouldn't wear clothing made of two different materials
(Leviticus 19:19), writer/performer R. Dale Smith presents his character as a heretical, unwanted "material mixer" who finds himself
drawn to Christianity while playing piano for a small country church.
Over the course of the 80-85 minute show audiences follow the character's bumpy faith journey, which involves the raising of theological questions about the human/divine nature of Christ, the content of Jesus' preaching, and about religious salvation itself - not to mention the character's "coming out" as a possible Christian to two friends, who offer unexpectedly poignant (and extremely funny!) responses. First produced for the 2008 Acts of Faith Festival, the nation's largest faith-based theater festival, JESUS PHREAK has been performed at colleges, seminaries, community centers, churches, and other venues nationwide, including James Madison University, Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Chicago Theological Seminary, San Jose State University, Affirmations: The Gay Community Center of Metro Detroit, and the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, DC.
